Around the Village
As early as the 1440’s the village of Findochty has crowded around the natural harbour known as the Crooked Haven. It expanded as a fishing port through the 1700’s and by 1850 was home to some 140 vessels. Nowadays the constant coming and going is by small craft berthed in the popular marina. The brightly coloured cottages cluster round the enchanting tidal harbour where it isn’t uncommon to get your hands on a free ‘fry’ of freshly caught mackerel, lobster or crab bequeathed by the local fishermen who are often pleased to share some of their catch of the day.
Visitors to ‘Finechty’ as it is known locally can find things to explore in every direction including the bottle-nosed dolphins regularly spotted in the bay and not forgetting that the village lies at the head of the fertile Morayshire countryside bounded by the river Spey to the west and the river Deveron to the east and stretching far inland towards the Cairngorms National Park.
